Craftmaking City Takaoka Craft Contest 2023 - Call for Entries

This year marks the 36th Takaoka Craft Contest, which was established in 1986 as a national public exhibition contest originated from traditional craftmaking areas. The purpose of the contest is to promote region brands and to revitalize craftmaking industries.

The "craft" that we think of today is a creative process which fully harnesses the qualities of the materials under the ingenuity and handicraft of the artist.

We are looking for original works which have the potential of enriching the future of our society and look forward to promoting them from Takaoka.

Submission Outline

1. Theme

The 2023 Contest Theme "Tobikoeru"

2. Participation Eligibility

No restrictions (individuals, groups, or businesses)

3. Submission Eligibility

Works fulfulling all of the following conditions.

  • Crafts which have not been published, or which have been released or published within the past year (from April 2022 onwards).
    • Works presented at other contests trade fairs, media, etc. are also eligible.
  • Works which reflect the artist's idea of craftsmanship.
  • Works showing originality (unbound by pre-existing works or concepts).
  • Works which the artist would like to sell.
    • Regardless of whether recreation is possible; as long as the works on display can be sold.
  • Works with a reasonable weight, size, and quantity to be considered for display.

4. Submission Period

From June 15th, 2023 to August 18th, 2023

  • The submission of the online form and transfer of the display fees should be made by August 18 (Fri), 11:59 pm.

5. Display Fees

  • 1st Screening
    5,000 yen/set
    (to be paid when you submit your application)
  • 2nd Sreening
    5,000 yen/set
    (to be paid for works moving beyond the 1st screening; please do not make a bank transfer until you have been contacted)
  • A set can be a single artwork, a pair of crafts of the same type, or a group of crafts with a unified design.
  • The display fee, once paid, cannot be refunded.

  • Please use the transfer form provided at the post office.
  • Please specify "Takaoka Craft Contest" in the note column of the transfer form.
  • Please make sure to specify the artist name and phone number entered on the application form. Name differences may cause delays in the processing of the payment.

7. How to Apply

8. Pre-sale (Schedule)

  • Pre-sale will be available for the selected works at the Crafts Exhibition.
  • The seller has right to 80% of the payment.
  • The seller will be contacted when an order has been placed; please deliver the artwork to the committee's office as soon as it is ready.
  • After inspection, the artwork will be sent to the buyer and 80% of the payment will be sent to the seller.
  • Scheduled. We will show you again when the details are decided.

Awards

Award-winning works shall be chosen from selected works.

  • Grand Prix (1): 1.2M yen
  • First Prize (1): 800,000 yen
  • Excellence Award (1): 300,000 yen
  • Regional Contribution Award: Takaoka Mayor's Award (1), Takaoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry President's Award (1) -> 50,000 yen each
  • Individual Perspective Award (4): 30,000 yen each
  • Selected works (including winning works) will be posted online and will be made available for pre-order at the Crafts Exhibition.

Crafts Exhibition

  • Date: November 3rd (Fri) to 5th (Sun)
  • Venue: Otaya Serio (Otaya-machi 101, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture)

Price Announcement

  • 1st screening late August
  • 2nd screening: awards and selected works will be announced on the official website.

Important

  • Ownership of the Grand Prix winning work belongs to the Craft Contest's executive committee; the work in question will be displayed on permanent exhibition at the Takaoka Design and Craft Center.
  • The copyright, industrial property rights, etc. of the submitted work belong to the applicant. Please complete relevant procedures such as design registration if deemed necessary. However, the organizer reserves the right to display award-winning and selected works, to post on websites and social media, and to use them for publicity.
  • If significant deficiencies or violations of rules come to light as in the following cases, the works in question will be excluded from the screening process. Awards and prizes may be revoked even if disclosure takes place after screening results have been announced.
    1. Works whose designs are the same or similar to previous designs (released prior to the period specified in the guidelines), or which are clearly infringements of copyrights, industrial property rights, etc. of other individuals (or companies).
    2. Works which violate the application guidelines.
    3. The application form is incomplete.
    4. The display fees are unpaid.
    5. Works did not arrive during the designated delivery period (specified dates) (after the 1st screening).
    6. Information on the application form (photos included) and the actual work are significantly different.
    7. Other cases deemed by the executive committee to contain deficiencies or violations.
  • Personal information entered in the application form will be used only for the management of this contest and will not be used for any other purposes.
